The
EmpowHER
Mentoring Program

2021/2022

Broad Goals for the Mentoring Program:

  • Provide higher learning opportunities for Mentees – e.g. internships, networking

  • Provide social emotional support – e.g. goalsetting, organizational skills, communication, EQ, negotiations skills etc.

  • Building on and to ensure success in the Fellowship program – whatever the young person needs to maximize their experience at the Apollo.

We aim for EmpowHer members to develop meaningful relationships with the young people/Apollo Fellows in the mentoring program. And for Mentees to benefit from having an EmpowHer member in their corner, supporting them, championing them and EmpowHering them on their short and longterm goals. We expect that members   maintain ongoing communication with their mentee throughout the year.

The EmpowHER steering committee, along with the Apollo will be providing training, and supportive events and information throughout the year to the mentor/mentee relationships.

EmpowHer members will be offered a menu of options that align with the existing focus of the group and expand to include youth engagement activities.

Each EmpowHer member will be able to curate their engagement based on her expert knowledge, professional experience, or interests. As well as being a mentor EmpowHer members will have multiple ways to collaborate throughout the year such as facilitating activities, developing content, or providing special services.

The types of activities that we provide will be robust, sustainable and approachable for members.

Opportunities to engage in the Mentoring Program:

  • Serve as a Mentor

Working with one young person over a period of 12 months with focused support from EmpowHer sub-committee. The minimum number of 1-2-1 meetings with a mentee is 6 a year, our preference is monthly meetings. Some of these can include the EmpowHER hosted events.

Attend EmpowHER hosted mentor mentee meet ups and mentor training (one session).

  • Design or provide a workshop:

Consider: does your company already provide young person workshops? If so, we may partner to provide them for Apollo youth. Or a program that can be adapted for young people

  • Participate on a panel

Consider: Sharing your experience and story of success. What was your professional pathway ? Was it linear or did you have a long and winding road?

  • Networking meet-ups

Consider: Fun (virtual and in-person) activities connecting young people with EmpowHer members and their connections

  • Internship opportunities

Consider: Do you have an opportunity to share in your firm, business network? Or, want to give a young person boost to add to their resume?

Commitment Statement

The mission of the EmpowHER  Mentoring Program is to empower young people  to take on their leadership and realize their full potential and beyond. By facilitating mentoring relationships, providing opportunities for reflection and self-examination, and teaching practical leadership skills. The program helps young people to strengthen their self-confidence, find their voice, and articulate and pursue their life and professional goals.

Mentor:  I will commit to act in my Mentee’s best interest with diplomacy and patience for the professional development process. I will not make decisions for my Mentee, but will strive to assist in the decision making process by providing knowledge I’ve gained in my life and within my profession. I will strive to include my Mentee in networking opportunities and to knowledge building events as appropriate.  I expect my Mentee to be committed to actively participate in their development.
